How did you learn to cut curly hair?

Initially, during my salon apprenticeship. I worked in a salon of about 15 stylists, most of whom had been in the industry for ~20 years in humid central Florida. When you're a curly girl down there you don't even try to fight it. I built on my curly-girl skills through classes and also actually getting in and working with the hair.

What's your technique?

The idea that revolutionized my approach to cutting curly hair was the link between hair and architectural support. Also, the understand of "releasing" the curl really guides me. Check out my portfolio at www.ShelbyGeorgeSmith.com

What products do you like best?

I like soft products like lotions and cremes.

Any advice for other stylists?

Encourage your clients to let you reteach them how to style their hair, step by step. Tell them what you are doing, how you are doing it and why you are doing it.

What's the hottest curly trend?

Undone, slept on, beachy curls.
