How did you learn to cut curly hair?
I learned to cut curly hair successfully by having curly hair. I was made by a mother and a father that had completely different types of curl. My father had the ringlets and my mother had waves with awful cowlicks. So the learning experience I had growing up with the combination of the two, (and my strong education background in cutting) I was able to understand how each curl works and reacts on each head.
What's your technique?
Clean, blunt cutting when wet and following the curl pattern ever-so-gently when texturizing (when wet). Twist cutting with thinning shears can help shape your style when dry as well.
What products do you like best?
Sebastian Stylixir Flex Styler is one of my favorites by far. It has this fun snotty feel to it, but it wraps around the curl and silhouettes it. When the hair dries, it has a lot of hold, but when you shake those curls out, they form right back together and doesn't frizz!
Any advice for other stylists?
DON'T BE INTIMIDATED! Curly haired girls are your most laid back ones! These are the girls that get out of the shower every morning and flip their head upside down to style their hair!
What's the hottest curly trend?
Shifts in volume! Just like you would want volume at the crown, you shift volume in curl to the crown as well; or just around the face.
