How did you learn to cut curly hair?
Curly hair has a mind of it's own and you have to have curly hair to practice on. The clients in the begining of my career let me try things because every stylist was picking the hair up and cutting it off causing bulky spots and unruly shapes. After cutting in a random pattern that allows the curl to do what it is going to do, it will do what it wants.
What's your technique?
Random pieces picked up and cut, but the key is to have the curly haired client use the products at home, shampoo, condition, and curl inhancher or gels or mousse which I prefer, ThermaFuse with Heat Smart Serum and let it dry or dry it like normal and then come to the salon and have a cut, while the hair is dry, then you style it and show them new ways to wear it.
What products do you like best?
ThermaFuse has the Heat Smart Complex in all their products so it protects and heals from the inside out, and the New Heat Smart Serum is the dry oil treatment that makes all hair shine and adds moisture controling fly aways.
Any advice for other stylists?
Don't pick curly hair up and cut it like you learned in beauty school it will only make things bulky and grow out is even worse. Use your eyes to see the shape and work with your client to achieve realistic goals. Show them how hair works so they can control it at home, where it really counts.
What's the hottest curly trend?
We are looking at the 80's so big is good and the shapes are more volume on top and long on the bottom which means you have to use a chewing technique to cut not sliding which causes more frizz, and use a leave in conditioner to add moisture.
