How did you learn to cut curly hair?

I have curly hair. After being butchered several times I started doing my homework.

What's your technique?

Never texturize textured hair. Clean lines are best for initial shape. Then you can go in with some pruning(like topiary). Never use a razor. Never use thinning shear or dull scissors. If you do the hair ends up looking like it was set on fire and blown out.

What products do you like best?

Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Firm hold gel. It gives great soft shine and flexible hold.

Any advice for other stylists?

Ask your client to tell you about their curls. Every head is different. Some curls more on top. Some curls underneath more. If you just ask questions and pay attention they will tell you what works. Be gentle-chances are they have been burned before. Most important never act like curls are a mistake. Not everyone looks good with straight hair.

What's the hottest curly trend?

Soft, loopy natural texture that is still touchable.a
