How did you learn to cut curly hair?

Having very kinky curly hair myself was my motivator. I was determined to cut curly hair in a way that would satisfy the client. I have attended many advanced hair cutting classes over 25 years of being in the business. I have picked up something different for curly hair from each one.

What's your technique?

I like to thin and layer really curly hair by slicing while spiraling down the hair in its curled state. Most important is remembering how much the hair will spring up, so I don't over cut. I do a lot of visual blending with curls.

What products do you like best?

Aquage and Moroccan Oil at the moment.

Any advice for other stylists?

Curly hair is more about sculpting than it is about a perfect haircut! It has to look good, more than measure perfect.

What's the hottest curly trend?

Using a product like a keratin straightener. This will calm curls enough to keep the frizz away, but not take away all the fun and bounce. Versatility is what's hot!
