How did you learn to cut curly hair?

I had the great fortune of training under Lorraine Massey, author of Curly Girl.

What's your technique?

Dry cutting only -- although I do cleanse the hair after I cut it and re-check, just in case the client straightens their hair somewhere down the road. You have to make sure everything looks clean. I like to educate the client on home care. It really makes a difference in the long haul.

What products do you like best?

Deva Curl and Deva Care.

Any advice for other stylists?

Create your own niche. Find something that you do better than anyone else or offer a service that no one else is doing. Then promote the hell out of yourself. Be contagious. People are drawn to people that are passionate.

What's the hottest curly trend?

Loving your own curly hair--embracing texture. That bone-straight look has finally passed. YAY!!
