How did you learn to cut curly hair?

I have pretty unruly curly hair myself, so after high school, I decided to go to beauty school to really learn how to do my own hair, thus learning how to teach others with my same issue. I've been doing it now for 8 years now and love it more every day!

What's your technique?

Depends on the type of curl... some times I'll cut it dry, curl by curl... other times I'll shampoo and cut wet.

What products do you like best?

Mixed Chicks is my number one product for curly hair. It's by far the best product I have ever found for curls. As I'm sure anyone with curly hair knows, it's a serious challenge finding a good product that works consistently! Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner? It's my go-to!

Any advice for other stylists?

Never ever diffuse a client's hair after combing through it while cutting. Always wet it back down. I have heard so many stories about stylists not understanding this and letting the client leave with frizzy, unfinished looking hair. Once you comb a wet curl, it loses it's shape. Once you wet it back down, you've got it back again.

What's the hottest curly trend?

I would say right now it would be thicker slices of color underneath the client's part. In doing this, the color curls perfectly around each curl and looks incredibly stylish!
