By far the best gel for those slicked back styles! Edges are LAID TO THE GAWDS with this one! Only thing best than the quality of this product is the price, beats that ecostyler craps by miles. No crunch, tons of shine, doesn't create white build up and takes about 10 mins to set. I do not believe in using anything else to slick my hair back, PERFECTTTTT

This gel is EXACTLY like Ecostyler gel, except it leaves my hair slightly less hard but their still is tremendous flaking. It does smell better than ecostyler though.

Yes, i agree with the last user. This is absolute crap. I was so "impressed" with the other reviews, + i read others on blackgirllonghair.com. Little did i know that many of the reviewers might have been "capes" for the company, or do not have 4 type hair. So i bought 2 jars since it's so much cheaper than Perfect Edges argon oil. Perfect Edges, your 4c hair IMMEDIATELY lays down without the use of water, scarf and time. With As I am? you need to slather on 1/2 the jar on top of using a lot of water PLUS a silk scarf. I wear lace wigs. At the end of the day, there is a bad smell from the lace being on top of the As I am gel. It smells like very dirty socks. i'm not kidding. i also find it strange that when companies cater to African american women, they use coconuts, bananas and other sweet "jungle fruit". Whereas with caucasion companies, AVeda, Paul Mitchell, and other reputable companies they use light scents. i will not buy this product again, due to the smell, the buildup, the hype and the absolute lack of hold. i'm looking at all the "Guest" reviews on this forum, and beginning to wonder, if they are capes as well.

This has to be the worst gel I have ever tried! It left my hair frizzy, no hold what so ever and loads of buildup!

Excellent for winter puffs and edges. Does not dry hair out. I like to mix up my styles so if I slick my hair into a puff one day and want a twist out the next day most gels I like in the summer (Eco Styler gel) leave my hair brittle and unbendable for the next day. This smoothing gel somehow slicks my hair in the winter yet at the end of the day I can still move my hair freely and my hair is still pliable - no crunch. love it :)

I absolutely love this stuff. I am currently on my second jar of it and I don't know what I would do without it. I pretty much use this stuff everyday no matter what look I am going for. I am in the military so I use it to smooth down my edges when I have to wear my hair in a bun and it holds beautifully throughout the day, even with me wearing a hat. I also use it all over when I am wearing my hair out and really helps to define my curls even more! I also love that it doesn't make my hair hard and it doesn't flake. Great product!

Used this to hold down my hairline fuzzies. kept them down and held in place without the stiffness or flakiness. Used double butter first on the edges and then applied the gel to keep it moisturized.

After my horrible experience with the curling jelly and my mediocre experience with the leave in conditioner, I was ready to cast "As I Am" products straight in the trash. However, I looked to my right and saw this little jar sitting there that I forgot I had even purchased. Reluctantly, I tried it initially for it's intended purpose- to smooth. Meh. It was okay. Again, I was giving As I Am the side eye. One morning I woke up to find that I was out of my favorite product for a wash and go. Low and behold, there goes that little jar again. I gave it a try and BAM! Curls popping, second day hair, even messy third day afro curls. Say word? Who knew that this was such a great wash and go gel. It also clumped my curls and gave my hair some shine. I also used it over the Dark n' Lovely curl defining gel, which my hair loves for some reason, and it allowed my hair to last 2 days with that combo. I really like this gel. I wish it came in a larger container.

I finally have enough hair to make a puff and this product works really well laying down my edges. It makes my hair really soft, which is surprising for a gel. I do experience build up, but that's only I repeat only if I am heavy handed when applying the gel. For those of you who feel that it doesn't provide enough shine, pull out some oil from your arsenal and apply it on top of the gel! Boom there's the shine!

This stuff is the bomb. I am 4 months into my transition and I have tried curl activator gels, eco styler, aloe vera gel and ampro. This stuff slicks my hair down and it stays. It brings out my waves like crazy. My hair has a sheen to it that I never got with the other gels. This gel holds my hair all day. The others konked out by midday. It's not crunchy or sticky. It rinses out easily. It smells yummy.I have nothing but good things to say about this gel. I only wish it came in a bigger container. I am going to stock up on this stuff. I now feel like I can make it through my transition. I have fine, 4a hair

I really like this gel. It's good to find a good hold smoothing gel in something on the natural side. It works for my updo's and slick backs. Another good find from As I AM.

4b The scent is great. I love these products but I notice when I use the smoothing gel I don't get a good hold once it dries. I also noticed I am left with a flaky build up wherever i apply the gel. I have to use a lot of the product to get my edges really smooth.

Ok this is by far one of the BEST non Harding smoothing gels I have used in ALONG time. if you literally follow the instructions it really works. No residue the next day and all you have to do is dampen the section the next day and smooth down. You don't even need to apply more. I tend to tie my hair down while getting dressed for extra smoothness, but you really don't have too. Only con is the shine its very little for me but the hold is excellent and this is in my staple pile for sure.

The best edge gel I've found! It lays them down without making them hard (even when I don't use a scarf). It never flakes and the next day a little water reactivates the gel. Love it!

I purchased this gel and I do love the smell and the ingredients. I also love the way that it hollds down my sides and I have had a few twist done with it. I did love that ; however on Wednesday I put it on to do a wash and go and Thursday morning I had small white balls all over my head SMH I had to do a puff. This gel is only good for certain things but not a wash n go. (Hair type 4b)

I thought that for sure this would be a winner because it got so many good reviews. I used it today to put my hair in a ponytail and to define my curls in the pony. It seemed to smooth and define my curls wonderfully when my hair was wet, but as the day progressed, my edges and the rest of my hair became frizzy. I also used almost half the jar just for that. It's not worth it and doesn't hold up to what it says.

This did not work for me and I really wanted it too. I liked the scent but the hold was not great, I got frizz, and it did not tame my edges. When I rinsed my hair felt kind of stripped which was weird. Im giving it 3 stars cause my hair be picky and I knkw as I am makes great products. No two heads are alike so I still say its worth a try.

Great product to use for slicking back one's hair with for creating buns and ponytails with. Also, it is perfect to use if you just want to tame your edges as well. The only reason why I did not give this product 5 stars is because it has very sweet scent to it. The scent is artificial and certainly could be toned down a bit.

Fantastic! I am transitioning and found it great! I use it to smooth my new growth down- I have about 4 inches. It brings out my natural waves and curls beautifully. Also makes my hair shiny and defined. Love, Love, Love! Lasts for 2 days then I have to either wash or re-wet and apply again. It's not greasy and I have no buildup or flakes. This is a must have for me!

This is great gel! I have had a hard time finding one that controls my hair, yet curls it. It holds well and I use it with the curl definer. I have to say that I love this line. It is economical, the products smell great, and they do what they say plus work well with each other. The Coconut CoWash is the only cleansing conditioner that I truley love. I have to say that my hair looks so shiny and bouncy with these products.

What I liked about this gel was the fact that my hair did lay down when I did my afro puffs, but didn't feel hard or anything like that.
