4 Tips For The Perfect Blow-Out
by Alicia Ward on Tuesday, June 26th, 2012
Curly hair is beautiful in it’s natural state. As stylists, we love to see woman embrace their natural curls, coils and waves. However, we know that everyone likes options and variety. No one person can eat the same lunch everyday for their entire life just like no one curly can wear her hair the same her whole life. Blow-outs are a great way to help your clients change up their look. Here are four tips to help you give your client the perfect blow out.
1. Start Clean and Detangled!
You should always start fresh and clean for a smooth blowout. When selecting a cleanser, pick one that has smoothing properties like Matrix Total Results Sleek Shampoo. Choose a conditioner that is very moisturizing and has smoothing and de-frizzing qualities. We recommend the pair to the above shampoo, Matrix Total Results Sleek Conditioner. You will need to do a thorough job of wide-tooth comb detangling before you get started to ensure you get every curl smooth. Before you detangle be sure to apply a leave-in conditioner. Again, when selecting products for a blow out, choose products that have a smoothing properties like Matrix Total Results Moisture Cure 2-Phase Leave-In Treatment. Hair should be damp but not dripping wet when you get started. Remember to use a microfiber towel to gently dry your curls before starting, because this will help reduce frizz and friction.
2. Protect and Separate!
To ensure that your curls are protected from heat damage, apply a heat protectant and smoother. Matrix Total Results Sleek Iron Smoother works to protect and smooth curls for heat styling. To apply this heat protectant place a dime to quarter size into your hand and distribute it evenly. Then, separate curls into sections, this will make the drying more manageable and reduce tangles.
3. Dry: Hot and Cold!
Now it’s time to start drying the hair in sections. Grab the first section and start drying it at the top, aiming the blow dryer downward and moving it from the top of the hair to the ends. Alternate between hot and cold settings on the blow dryer. It’s best to use a round brush and a dryer with a concentrator nozzle. These are must have tools for a good blow out. Using high heat and a concentrator nozzle to direct the dryer’s airflow, dry hair from root to tip for about 8 seconds, then lock out the frizz by using the cool shot button for 5 seconds. If the hair is excessively curly or coily, start by drying hair from mid-shaft to end to minimize styling time.
4. Stop the Frizz!
When you are done drying, to continue to lock out the frizz, dab a pea-sized amount of smoothing oil onto your hands and smooth it into the ends of the hair to define and separate your tresses. Matrix Total Results Silk Wonder Smoothing Oil will smooth frizz and flyaways. Finish the look by applying Matrix Total Results Amplify Volume Flexible Hold Hairspray, a light hold flexible hairspray that will really lock out the frizz.
Help your clients get your their curls back after their blow out. Deep condition with Matrix Total Results Color Care Intensive Mask to get your client’s moisture and definition back.

Delicious Curl Miracles from Matrix Total Results
by CurlStylist on Tuesday, November 15th, 2011
Some hair types are solid and dependable — pretty much always the same. Not curls. Every day is different when it comes to this sassy hair type. Curls can be springy and obedient on Monday, fuzzy and unruly on Tuesday and limp and listless by Friday. That’s why when it comes to care and styling, there’s no such thing as “the usual.” Different days call for different strategies, and a variety of yummy product miracles!
“I work with my curly clients to teach them how to cope with every type of hair day they encounter,” says Matrix Artistic Director Nick Stenson. “During the consultation, we talk about the differnent situations they encounter, and then we come up with a customized solution — products and styling — for each one.”
Here are two of Nick’s favorite Total Results Curl Cocktail “Recipes!”
Matrix Curl Miracle Gel.
Overworking and undermoisturizing leaves these locks looking rough, fuzzy and coarse.
- Shampoo and condition with Total Results Curl Shampoo and Conditioner to gently cleanse, nourish and replenish moisture.
- Towel dry and apply Total Results Miracle Super DeFrizzer Gel to damp hair. This liquid gel melts into hair instantly, and provides control and definition without a trace of crunch. Comb through with a wide-tooth comb.
- Use the diffuser attachment to spread out airflow and use a low air setting to maintain texture and dry curls gently. Tilt the head to the side, allowing hair to hang freely. Position the diffuser beneath the hair, push up and dry.
- Work a dime-sized amount of Total Results Sleek Wonder Smoothing Oil between hands, and gently press and squeeze curls to quench any trace of dryness. This ultra-light, rapidly absorbed formula offers 24 hour repair and frizz-fighting power.
Fine texture causes these coils to droop before the day is done.
Matrix Curl Contouring Cream.
- Shampoo and condition with Total Results Curl Shampoo and Conditioner for lightweight cleansing and care. Towel dry.
- Apply Total Results Amplify Wonder Boost Root Lifter to the scalp area. This innovative formula features a unique directional nozzle that points root-lifting muscle directly where it’s needed. Lift lasts for 24 hours.
- Work Total Results Curl Contouring Lotion through midlengths and ends. This nourishing and moisturizing formula boosts body, bounce and shine.
- Remove all moisture and encourage volume by drying hair with a diffuser attachment with the head tilted forward.
- Using a medium-sized curling iron, spin large sections vertically along the outside of the barrel. Slide the hair off the iron with the curl intact and clip to the head.
- Once hair has cooled completely, remove the clips and allow curls to unfurl. Without disturbing the curl formation, mist with Total Results Amplify Proforma Hairspray to provide extra lift and maxium hold.
The best way to mix up the ultimate cocktails for your curls is to experiment with a variety of Total Results formulas, says Nick. Try a little of this, a little of that and soon, you’ll find the perfect blends!

Enjoy this brief wrapup of a couple new coloring processes.
Matrix’ Luminous Match Tool
The Luminous Match Tool is designed to be used with Matrix’s Dream.Age SOCOLOR (above)
It’s no secret great haircolor starts with a great consultation, but due to the fact that there are no standards for consultations, they aren’t always great. Recognizing this, Matrix created the Luminous Match Tool—a device colorists can use to critique tone for optimal color formulation. Matrix artistic color director Patrick McIvor uses the tool in his color studios (patrick mcivor color studio and studio two) to create multi-reflective personalized haircolor for guests.
“Have you ever seen someone with vibrant, shiny, multi-dimensional haircolor, but it doesn’t look good on them? It’s probably the wrong tone. People are divided into warm and cool tone categories, but the problem is, determining tone can be subjective and most people have features that are a mix of warm and cool tones. The trick is to critique tone properly and use a color with the correct tone. The Luminous Match Tool gives colorists a reference when critiquing hair, skin and eye tone, standardizing the process into four simple steps, ” explains McIvor.
1. Determine natural level and tone of hair, including the percentage of gray.
2. Critique skin tone by matching the color swatches to the inside of the forearm where skin is not exposed to sun or makeup.
3. Establish tone of eyes by matching to either warm or cool chart.
4. Choose color.
“Most people’s features are not universally warm or cool - The Luminous Match Tool advises colorists to go with the majority (2 out of the three). For instance, if someone has cool hair, warm skin and warm eyes, they would look better in a warmer haircolor. The Luminous Match Tool also allows colorists to stay focused on their guest and not a celebrity picture that a person has brought, which has nothing to do with their personal features, hair or tone. It also validates the colorist’s haircolor choice for the guest,” he adds.
The Luminous Tool is designed to use with new Matrix SOCOLOR Dream.Age—a richly pigmented, multi-reflective color with 100% gray coverage that is balanced with tonal richness.

Also, because these products deliver high-lift color with gentle results, the condition of hair stays healthy and shiny!
Tip from Philip Pelusi
Master stylist Philip Pelusi suggests we remind clients to look for hair conditioning and styling products that contain UV absorbers. These products will help filter the sun’s rays to help protect clients’ beautiful haircolor from UV damage. As with sunscreens, these products should be applied before sun exposure and it is also a good idea to wet the hair throughout the day to help prevent moisture loss.
It is also a good idea to make repeat applications throughout the day, as SPF products are known to lose their effectiveness due to UV exposure. Due to the need to repeat this application, a weightless, non-greasy product should be used that detangles and helps control texture and eliminate frizz, such as Pelusi’s Tela Beauty Organics Guardian SPF-18.
