Pravana Keratin Glaze Changes the Face of Blow Drying

by Susonnah Gonzalez on Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Straightened Hair

The beauty of Keratin Glazing is in the results.

The new Pravana Naturceuticals, named for the presence of keratin, has taken the salon blow drying service to a new level. With their new product called “Keratin Glazing,” the hair dryer can provide shinier, smoother, healthier looking blowouts. The Keratin Glazing kit utilizes pure keratin-based proteins that make hair strands stronger and more resilient to breakage.

“The beauty of our Keratin Glazing application is the beauty of its results. It exponentially ratchets up the shine quotient, it’s easy to apply, works to enhance color and texture services, while leaving hair healthy, shiny and more manageable. We’re thrilled to bring this to market—and the beauty and salon marketplace is responding in kind,” says Pravana CEO Steven Goddard.

The keratin in the treatment will not only add luster to your locks, but it also gives vibrancy to color-treated hair and texture. After using the keratin glazing kit, your hair will lock in the natural protein and your curls appear shinier and healthier. The Pravana Naturceuticals combine the power of nature with technological innovation, and uses nine Meso-American botanicals to increase your hair’s overall wellness. The Proprietary Naturceutical complex also uses three advanced hydrolyzed proteins to boost strength and elasticity—a must when it comes to curls.

All of Pravana’s products are of the highest quality, and meet the strictest environmental regulations. None of their products is tested on animals, and their shampoos are sulfate- and sulfite-free. If you want to try the new Pravana Keratin Glaze, read on for instructions on how to use it.

1. Shampoo your hair with Pravana Keratin Fusion Sulfate Free shampoo.
2. Towel dry your hair.
3. Apply Keratin Fusion Reconstructing Serum onto hair and comb through.
4. Spray keratin fusion thermal insulator throughout the hair.
5. Blow dry your hair until it is about 99% dry.
6. Smooth hair over with a flat iron to seal in the Keratin Glaze.

My New Love: CHI Enviro American Smoothing Treatment

by Megan Dorcey on Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Megan before

Megan in all her natural curly glory

Throughout the past year, we have all had mixed emotions about the various keratin treatments available to us.  I, like any good researcher, went and had a keratin treatment last year.  Like a lot of people, I was happy with the results, but the process left me with irritated eyes, and a lot of questions.

In response to concerns over the safety of traditional aldehyde-containing straightening treatments,  CHI has introduced the revolutionary Enviro Smoothing Treatment that is completely formaldehyde-free and safe to your clients as well as yourself. The CHI Enviro American Smoothing Treatment (CurlStylist has dubbed it the CHI EAST) is composed of amino acids, pearl and silk.  No harmful chemicals means you have a clear conscious when that client asks for the treatment.

I didn’t understand how the treatment could actually make the hair straighter and smoother without chemicals, but CHI Enviro’s protein and amino acid complex allows temporary change in the structure of hair fibers, leaving hair easier to comb and hair that is silkier, smoother and shinier, so its protein and amino acid complex is what allows the system to straighten the hair.

Megan after

Megan after her CHI Enviro American Smoothing Treatment

I had the treatment done last weekend and I will have to say that the process is fairly similar to other treatments I’ve had; many steps of washing, drying, flat-ironing.  A few things that were drastically different: no smell, well, actually, there was a smell, and it was vanilla, not the eye-watering chemicals of other systems.  When Rafael (my own personal CHI Educator) was flat-ironing the treatment onto my hair, there was literally only steam coming off of it, and it didn’t make my eyes water, or make my throat close up.  I actually didn’t notice until halfway through the process.

All in all, I was one happy camper.  Many of us felt like we were lied to by various companies in the past, and we were more than skeptical with this new treatment.  We can’t wait until this safe (physically and environmentally) treatment is offered in all of the salons instead of the harmful keratin processes.  You’ve made believers in us, CHI.

Brazilian Keratin Treatments Not All Cracked Up to Be

by Chair to Chair/Shannon McCarthy on Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

shannon mccarthy

Shannon McCarthy is a senior stylist and educator for James Joseph Studio and James Joseph Salon. James Joseph Salon and Studios are the most award-winning salons in Boston with more than 30 local and national awards. James Joseph Salon has been named one of the Top 100 Salons in America by “Elle” magazine, and James Joseph Studio has been named the Best Affordable Salon in Boston. James Joseph has also been one of the Salon Today 200 three times.

The demand for permanent hair straightening or a “miracle” product is somewhat overwhelming. There are so many straightening products out there that navigating the risks and benefits to fit each individual can be a difficult task. The Brazilian keratin treatment is the latest and greatest in permanent hair straightening. The results are truly amazing and initially extremely exciting for someone who has wanted straight hair all her life. This is exactly the type of client I think is a perfect candidate for this treatment. I have trouble wanting to sell this treatment to anyone else. Since this craze has come into the salons, I have seen extreme variance in the lasting effects. The keratin treatment that is marketed to last 6 to 8 months can be a bit deceiving. I have seen cases where 3 years have passed and the clients curl is still not the same. Will it ever be? To attempt to classify all types and textures of curly hair into one does not make sense to me. As stylists, we know that curly hair is a very complex thing. Curls vary from person to person.

For someone who has very thick, wiry hair, yes this treatment may be gone in 6 to 8 months. I have seen cases where it is not. With that being said, can you even begin to estimate what the time table will be for someone with tamer hair? I think that keratin treatments are great but inconsistent on their lasting effects. As a stylist, I am uncomfortable giving my clients unreliable information. When thinking about the chemical controversy with the treatments in relationship to the varying results, I choose to stay away all together. When I see that people are wearing face masks while doing the service, I think “Is it really worth the risk?” They say that it is chemically safe for the clients because they are not getting the smoke from the iron billowing in their face. I am not fully convinced. What happens to the stylist that does 6 or 7 treatments a week for a year? I know some stylists that do 10 a week.

I have talked previously about being a fan of embracing curls. This could be why I am so opposed to these treatments. The reality is that there are many different types of curls and many different clients who have them. As stylists, it is our job to give clients the facts. No matter where your opinions lie, as long as you are up to speed on the latest improvements or discredits of straightening trends, you will have clients who thank you for your knowledge and honesty instead of trying to make a quick buck.

Texture: Giving Clients the Texture They Want

by Michelle Breyer on Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Learn more about Texture!, a collaboration between CurlStylist, NaturallyCurly and Modern Salon

What if there was a product that allowed you to give clients exactly what they want? It could be used to straighten, loosen or defrizz waves and curls without damaging hair or creating an awkward grow-out period. What if this product could be used on any hair type to make the hair softer and shinier? And what if it boosted profits for salons and stylists by creating an entirely new market?

That product, say some stylists, now exists. Keratin treatments have exploded onto the scene, generating buzz among consumers and stylists alike.

A Cure for Frizz?

Keratin Complex Treatment

Three years ago, a handful of keratin companies existed—pioneers like Brazilian Keratin Treatment by Marcia Teixeira, Keratin Complex by Coppola and Global Keratin. At July’s 2010 Cosmoprof North America show in Las Vegas, there were more than 40 companies offering keratin treatment products, from large hair-care companies to small start ups.

“To have a product like a keratin straightener is a breakthrough,” says Stephanie Kocielski, a John Paul Mitchell.

Keratin Complex Products

Not so long ago, the only option to remove texture in the hair was to use a product containing sodium hydroxide—lye. Next came relaxers containing ammonium thioglycolate (nicknamed “thio relaxer”), a gentler service.

Most recently, those opting for a straighter look flocked to Japanese thermal reconditioning, a chemical process that permanently alters the internal structure of the hair shaft, rendering it totally straight. Thermal reconditioning (TR) was an all-or-nothing proposition, and many women with texture weren’t willing to commit to it.

But keratin treatments have not been without their share of controversy, either. When they first came on the scene, the formulas contained formaldehyde—sometimes in high concentrations. Formaldehyde is listed as a carcinogen by a number of health and safety agencies. Now many of the treatments are lower or free of formaldehyde and aldehydes, a family of compounds that straighten the hair. Many of the aldehydes are naturally derived and less toxic than formaldehyde. Additionally, some stylists and clients may wear masks to protect themselves from any irritants.

A World of Options

Global Keratin Products

Today’s new wave of relaxers, silkeners and smoothers give clients and stylists more choices than ever.

“It’s all about making your texture—whatever it is—better,” says Sasha Polit, marketing manager for Global Keratin Smoothing System. “If you want to change the texture, we offer that option, but if you want to work with your natural texture, we also offer that option.”

Global Keratin offers Light Wave, for those who want to keep their natural texture; Curly, for those who want more straightening capability; and Resistant, for the straightest look.

Methods vary, but the most commonly-used keratin treatment involves the stylist washing a client’s hair with a clarifying shampoo, applying the keratin treatment and then using a flat iron to straighten the hair and “seal” the treatment.

Global Keratin Before

Before

“In the past, there weren’t a lot of options,” says Darby Shields, associate artistic director for ISO, which developed the Maintamer, a semi permanent retexturizer that softens and smooths naturally curly or previously permed hair. “You either had floppy hair, curly hair or straw hair. There wasn’t a lot in between. It was a big decision for people to do something so permanent with their hair. Maintamer is reversible the next day.”

Global Keratin After

After

With variety of new options comes an increased need for communication between stylist and client.

“When they start asking about a treatment, you have to dig deep into what they really want,” says Amanda Jenkins, master stylist and education director at Arrojo Studio. “Can they achieve it without a chemical treatment? I ask my clients to bring in pictures so we’re both very clear about what they’re expecting. It’s all about the consultation.”

Sleek Service

Some clients may want their hair completely straight. In that case, Kocielski says she may suggest The Relaxer by JPMS, a sodium hydroxide relaxer that eliminates curl. “Some people think they’ll be able to wash their hair and it will dry straight, but that’s probably not the case with a keratin treatment,” she says. “Keratin treatments can condition and soften the hair, but they don’t always straighten it.”

Price is also an important consideration. Keratin treatments and other types of chemical relaxers cost several hundred dollars, and may need to be redone every three to five months.

For the stylist, keratin treatments have provided a way to make their clients happy and boost their profit margin at the same time. One 32-ounce bottle of the KeraFusion System from De Fabulous can generate $4,000 for the stylist, says Rebecca Letizia, marketing director of De Fabulous.

BKT Products

In addition to the in-salon treatments, companies like Keratin Complex, Global Keratin and Marcia Teixeira Brazilian Keratin Treatment offer maintenance products designed to extend the life of the service and enhance the results. These products can also boost retail sales for the salon.

“These clients will come back every three to five months,” Polit says. “The more they use the product, the shinier, softer and more manageable their hair will be. You’re building
a client for life.”

The PhytoSpecific PhytoRelaxer relaxes or texturizes all hair types with a non-chemical formula. It comes in two levels: one for fine, delicate hair and one for coarse, resistant hair.

Smooth Operators

Here are a few of the keratin treatments available on the market today:

Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola: Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy was founded by stylist and salon owner Peter Coppola. The therapy eliminates up to 95 percent of frizz and curl and instantly adds shine and condition to the hair.

Marcia Teixeira Brazilian Keratin Treatment: This treatment is for all kinds of hair to leave it soft, shiny and frizz-free for up to four months. It can be used safely on just about any type of hair—dry, frizzy, overprocessed, color treated, ethnic unprocessed virgin hair.

Pravana Kerafusion Keratin Treatment: This salon service permanently transforms coarse, curly, unruly hair to smooth, straight and shiny. Or, it makes fine, limp hair voluminous. It contains no thio, no sodium hydroxide, no formaldehyde, no aldehydes. As part of the Keratin Fusion service, Pravana’s Thermal Insulator protects the hair during the texture control.

Brazilian Blowout: Through the use of a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex and a proprietary polymer system, the Brazilian Blowout improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle. Results last up to 12 weeks.

Global Keratin: The Juvexin Hair Taming System incorporates a keratin formulation which protects the hair and prevents damage to hair surface. The system is an organic, active complex component, delivered to the hair in its raw, natural state. Amino acids and proteins remain whole to condition hair and protect it from damage caused by environmental factors.

ISO Maintamer: ISO Maintamer Straightening System is a two-step straightening system that smoothes coarse hair, taming unruly curls and waves, un-perming ends and controlling frizzy hair. Maintamer uses a damage-free, thio-free, lye-free Isoamine technology that processes primarily within the cortex of the hair, to minimize damage to the cuticle while altering the pattern of naturally curly or previously permed hair to soften and smooth.

La Brasiliana: Intense treatment that softens, smoothes and relaxes all hair types. Available in Original, Apple and Mocha varieties.

PhytoSpecific PhytoRelaxer: This non-chemical relaxer relaxes or texturizes all hair types. Formulated with molecules from egg and soya, it is odorless and does not contain lye. It’s available in two levels: for fine, delicate hair and one for coarse, resistant hair.

Keep Those Keratin Clients

by Megan Dorcey on Monday, August 16th, 2010

By now, we have all heard enough about how a keratin treatment can zap your clients’ frizzies for the summer, but what happens when the weather cools down and humidity abates?  Most of the country is staring fall weather right in the face, and it begs the question of whether or not keratin treatments will still be a profitable source of income in the winter months.

There are many valid points that you should bring up to assure that your clients are keeping their treatments regular.  For starters, the humidity may not be an issue any longer, but the majority of the country is facing brutally cold and dry air, which can lead to damage.  Make sure that they know that while they are getting a keratin treatment, they are also coating their strands which will prevent any breaking that dry air and flat irons will cause.

Cuticle Pictures

Marcia Teixeira offers a line called Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT), which boasts on their website that the product “penetrates the hair, repairing internal damage and coats the hair preventing further damage. The results are SOFT, SHINY, STRAIGHT hair”, on their website.  The main focus of these keratin treatments is to repair the hair strands that have been damaged and to protect them from future breakage.

Keeping your clients as regulars in your chair will not only help your pocketbook, but will ultimately help them maintain their hair health.  Remember, when you are facing a client who has struggled with trying to smooth their locks—you are the therapist.

Check Out the Latest Irons and Dryers

by Victoria Wurdinger on Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Ceramic, ionic and tourmaline made hot tools sizzle. First, the technologies boosted sales; now fashion is driving trends. Just in case you forgot what does what:

  • Ceramic: Creates even heat distribution and snag-free gliding.
  • Far-Infrared Heat: When absorbed, it dries hair from the inside out to work faster and minimize cuticle damage.
  • Ionic: Negative ions split or electrolyze water molecules, causing them to penetrate deeply but evaporate faster. When negative ions are attracted to positive ones, they neutralizing them, causing the cuticle to close. Results: smoother, shinier hair.
  • Tourmaline: When heated, this gemstone produces more negative ions than any other substance, plus far-infrared heat. The claims: Even heat distribution, faster drying times, less damage, increased shine.

A slew of new high-tech tools accommodate today’s trends. Celebrities’ sexy waves are behind the renewed interest in curling irons of all shapes and sizes. For smooth styles, Brazilian Keratin treatments usually require a flat iron at an even 450-degrees (newer systems use irons at 430-degrees).

Smoothing and Straightening

flat iron

H2Pro’s Vivace Flat Iron

Summertime finds lots of stylists pumping out the Brazilian Keratin Treatments. At Marie Bove in NYC, salon, celebrity and super-session stylist Don Francis, likes H2Pro’s Vivace Flat Iron, which combines ceramic, far-infrared heat and three different nano technologies: “It works fast and adds incredible shine.” On-set, he favors the versatility of Create Ion’s styling irons with digital ceramic technology, a real-time LCD display and cushions for optimum plate alignment. Says Francis, “The Create Ion two-way styler lets you curl or straighten hair, so there’s less to carry in my kit when I work on location.

As flat irons evolve, they always add the newest technologies. For instance, Brazilian Heat After Dark’s newest flat iron uses floating titanium plates, which allow smooth gliding. Titanium heats more efficiently and holds heat at a consistent temperature for zero recovery time, claims Denise Russell, regional sales manager for Belson Products.

For his Brazilian treatments, Mohammad Rahebi, founder of Signature Salon and now stylist and manager at Identity Salon in Encino, CA., reaches for the IZUNAMI 450. “This flat iron is hot, hot, hot,” says Rahebi. “It reaches optimum temperature in just 30 seconds and stays there, so styling takes less time.” Even when he uses it sans BKT, his clients rave about their shiny, healthy-looking hair, he adds.

One iron that accommodates almost every need is FHI Heat’s Runway Styling Iron, which features 6 layers of ceramic heat and tourmaline to produce 20 percent more negative ions. Its temperature range is one of the widest around (140º - 450º F), and “InStyle” magazine named it as one of its “2010 Best Beauty Buys.”

When it comes to straightening curly hair, Ruth Rivas, stylist and co-director of education for Salon Sessions Studio in Pasadena, CA., is a raving Runway iron fan.

“With the Runway iron, I’m able to do my job better and faster,” says Rivas. “Because the I.C.H.S. heating system provides consistent heat across the surface of the plate, there’s no downtime. It also features advanced ceramic tourmaline technology and emits gentle, far-infrared heat to prevent damage. Since it comes in a one-inch size, I’m able to create endless styles and have a guarantee that the look will last all day.”

Curling up to a New Look

HAI Elite Digistik

HAI Elite Digistik

With everyone going gaga over curls, waving irons have also upped their techno-game. For instance, at HAI, HAI Elite irons feature nano-tourmaline technology and clampless styling, while HAI Classic Pro products are frequently re-tooled to add the latest technologies, such as lightweight, ergonomic designs with non-slip finger grips.

How irons look matter, too. The HAI Stylemate comes in four fashion colors: black, magenta, purple and teal. It features nano tourmaline-infused ceramic floating plates, heats up to 390º F in 5 seconds and allows waving, curling or straightening on the go.

In addition to cool colors, companies are offering broader size selections. Andis’ newest Elevate iron, the Marcel Tourmaline Nano-Ceramic Iron, comes in 1-inch and ¾-inch sizes. Ivan Zoot, the company’s director of education, says schools are fueling the demand for Marcel irons, but that purists prefer them, too.

“They’re great for using with a candlestick technique, in which a section of hair is pulled out from the head and loosely wrapped around the vertically held Marcel iron,” says Zoot. “With a Marcel iron, you can regulate the pressure of the clamp, which allows more creative freedom.”

For maximum versatility, Garrett Markenson, the owner of Garett Markenson Coiffure in Valencia, CA who also studied fine art in Florence, Italy, loves Hot Tools’ new Blue Ice Titanium irons because the four specialty irons create waves, spirals, ribbons or coiled curls and use state-of-the-art titanium technology. “They’re totally contemporary and help make styling fun by giving give me everything I need to create every type of curl,” says Markenson.

Celebrity stylist Tippi Shorter, who is based in New York and does hair for Alicia Keys, among others, says her favorite tool for curly hair is the Brazilian Heat Ceramic Curl Iron. “It’s a great way to enhance natural curls that may need a spruce up,” says Shorter. “I love the long barrel, which allows longer hair to wrap around the iron more easily, and the double-dipped ceramic coating means even curly hair releases effortlessly.”

Extra Help

Even brushes are being developed for more specific benefits than ever. For instance, YS Park brushes from Dowa, which are available at onsalon.com and passionbeauty.com, were created by a Japanese hairdesigner of Korean heritage for maximum engineering advantages.

Says Garrett Markenson, who is an educator, session stylist and owner of Garett Markenson Coiffure in Valencia, CA, “I like the YS Park G1 Brush for curly hair because it’s a fine-crafted, tailored tool with combination boar/nylon bristles. The boar bristles smooth the cuticle and help distribute natural oils evenly, so the hair shines, while the nylon bristles provide the necessary tension to smooth curl. It just gets better with use—I’ve had mine for four years now!”

For extra help, products are going beyond thermal protectors to ones that speed the entire dry/style process. Just one: Kenra’s Platinum Blow-Dry Spray, which uses evaporative silicones that instantly pull moisture out of the hair, helping it dry faster to dramatically decrease blow-dry time. Of course, it also provides thermal protection against heat up to 428 degrees.

Faster Drying

Blow dryers have also adapted to techno-trends. For instance, the mid-priced Mega Hot line (LINK www.belsonproducts.com), which was retooled and will be re-launched in September, is introducing the Mega Hot Professional Ionic Euro Dryer, which has ionic generators with on-off switches. Which switch position you use depends on hair type and climate—remember that ionic technology smoothes and closes the cuticle.

Says Shorter, “The great thing about having an ionic generator that can be turned on and off is that not all hair types need ions. Ions take the moisture out of the hair, seal the cuticle and dry the hair faster, so there is no frizz. If you live in a humid climate, you want to use the ionic generator. But in a dry climate, if your hair is curly and fine, hair goes limp with the ions. The Mega Hot dryer is one of the only professional dryers available that gives users the option to turn the generator on or off.”

When it comes to blow-styling curly hair, Michael Beardé, owner of Salon Beardé in Mission, KS, can’t live without his FHI Heat EPS 2100 Blow Dryer. It makes it easy to dry and style even super-curl without damage or frizz, thanks to nano-fuzeion technology, which he describes as a combination of nano-titanium, nano-titanium oxide and nano-silver particles.

“Together, they leave the hair soft and shiny, while removing chemical build-up, toxins, bacteria, static and impurities such as smoke,” says Beardé. “The dryer also features advanced ceramics and tourmaline technology; it’s low in electromagnetic field and emits gentle far-infrared heat to prevent damage to hair. With twenty-five percent more air velocity and high heat, it dries the hair in about half the time of other dryers.”

Beardé adds that it comes with a free diffuser and a concentrator, which is especially important for taming frizz.

Proving that blowers can get in on hot designs, too, IGP Beauty, Inc. recently announced the launch of the Ed Hardy Vintage Collage Hair Tool Line with a professional styling iron and blow dryer that feature the bold designs of Ed Hardy’s artwork. Clearly, when it comes to cool new tools, not only do new technologies support artistic efforts, but unexpected colors and high-fashion designs add flash to your presentation and sizzle to your style.

Braziliante by Cadiveu Smooths Locks Without Damage

by Michelle Breyer on Monday, May 24th, 2010

Braziliante by Cadiveu

With the rising humidity of summer comes frizz for many people with wavy and curly hair.

Braziliante by Cadiveu offers a solution for those seeking smoother hair without damage.

The product, imported from Sao Paulo, Brazil, is used by top salons and stylists around the country.

The formaldehyde-free treatment—from beginning to end— takes about 90 minutes, with no down or processing time between steps. It is designed to work well on on all hair types.

It improves the condition of the hair by creating a protein layer on the hair cuticle to smooth and prevent frizz.

“Once a client has this treatment they can go to Miami on the most humid day of the summer and their hair will not frizz, rather will stay smooth, silky and shiny just as it does when they walk out of the salon,” says Braziliante by Cadiveu founder Christine Medrick.

First the hair is washed with an anti-residue shampoo to open the hair cuticle. Then the solution is applied thoroughly and evenly to the hair. It is blow dried and flat-ironed in 1-inch sections six to eight times with a 450-degree iron to lock in the treatment. Finally, a masque is applied for a few minutes before the hair is rinsed.

In addition to reducing frizz, smoothing the hair and adding shine, another major benefit of the treatment is that it cuts drying time down to one third. If it usually takes 45 minutes, it will only take 15 post-treatment because the hair has less porosity.

Keratin Treatments are Still Hot

Brazilian Blowout Example

A Keratin makeover by Brazilian Blowout

Keratin treatments are still among the most-talked about —and desired— procedures in the haircare industry. Your clients probably request them daily. If your salon isn’t offering the latest treatments—ones that can be done in an hour or so— you should check them out!

You probably know that these treatments have many names—Brazilian blowout, BKT, keratin straightening, hair keratin straightening, escova progressiva—, and are a method of temporarily straightening hair by applying a liquid keratin and aldehyde solution and sealing it with a flat iron.

Keratin treatment is a long-term “blow dry” for hair that lasts about three months. It is designed for people who have curly or frizzy hair but would like a straighter appearance. Pioneered in Brazil, keratin treatments can be performed on virgin as well as chemically treated hair.

The system is said to eliminate any frizz, unruly curls and waves without making it too flat like other treatments such as the Japanese Yuko System.

Keratin treatments different from Japanese straightening treatments not only in the ingredients, but also in that keratin treatments are not permanent; the treatment gradually “wears off” after 10-12 weeks. Japanese straightening also tends to be more expensive and takes longer in the salon.

Robert Coykendall at Hair Studio 411 in Punta Gorda, Fla., said keratin treatments have a profound effect on his clients. “It makes a huge difference,” he said. “One woman we did recently was so excited because she could actually put her hands through her hair.”

CurlTalker Suzie E was somewhat less impressed with the results from her BKT. “My hair was loose, but not really that big of a difference.”

This result, however, is exactly what some curlies are looking for: looser curls, waves even, instead of tight ringlets. Many seek BKT to achieve the “beach wave” look that is so popular right now.

Read NaturallyCurly co-founder Michelle Breyer’s blog about her keratin treatment, and check here for more info about Keratin.

Deborah Dreyer, owner of A Nu-U Salon in Cranston, RI, agrees. Most of her customers who seek BKT are after a looser curl pattern. “They want to get up and go,” says Dreyer.

Dreyer says she especially loves the new advanced keratin treatments. “You don’t have to wait three days before washing your hair,” she says. “And the results with the new ones are much better,” she says.

“My clients walk out of here saying, ‘The answer is keratin,’” says Dreyer. “If your hair is frizzy and disheveled, you’ll love keratin.”

The keratin straightening treatment is a savior for hair in need of TLC, according to Michael Boychuck, hair aficionado, celebrity stylist and owner of three stylish salons. He says the treatments revive and replenish hair, leaving it soft, smooth and camera-ready.

Suzie E says she’s on the fence as to whether she’ll repeat BKT. “My hair is very dry — I’m having to constantly use deep treatments.”

The cost of the treatment ranges from $250 to $400, and most of the treatment manufactures recommend that you use their line of shampoos, conditioners, etc. after you have the treatment, to ensure best results.

Another new development is the marketing of many of these treatments as “formaldehyde-free”. While this is true, a truly straightening keratin treatment must contain some product from the aldehyde family of compounds in order to do the straightening. Keratin in and of itself does not straighten; it coats the hair and gives it the shiny, glossy finish. Many of the aldehydes are naturally derived and less toxic than formaldehyde. Still, it is recommended that pregnant women do not undergo the treatment. Additionally, many stylists and clients wear masks to protect themselves from any irritants. Some salons have even set up specially ventilated rooms to quickly dispel fumes.

If a “keratin” straightening product is truly aldehyde-free, then it is a different product than what is typically referred to as a keratin treatment, and the results from the treatment will likely last a much shorter time, possibly only until the next wash.

If you aren’t currently performing this service, you might want to check into it. It’s very popular and a good source of revenue. Many of the manufacturers offer training.
