One reason naturals embrace their curls is for their love of versality. If your clients want to keep up with the trends without compromising their tresses, celebrity stylist Kiyah Wright has fabulous color techniques for extensions.
Not only does Kiyah Wright reign supreme as color queen, she’s styled the crowns of Kerry Washington, Chaka Khan and Tyra Banks and many other celebrities. She has also been the stylist behind the scenes of the Daytime Emmy Awards, MTV Awards and the Grammys.
This Clairol Professional Celebrity Colorist took the crowd by storm as she lead a seminar on fall 2012 color trends at the Bronner Bros International Hair Show. Below are her tips that will help you acheive ombre highlights, vibrant red color and chalking on wavy, curly and coils extensions for your clients.
To achieve these striking looks, which may be a far departure from any natural hues, hair extensions are the best route to protect the integrity of the hair.
Chalking is an easy and fun way for curly clients to experiment with bright hues! You can bleach the extensions to the lightest blonde using a Clairol Professional Over 40 Volume Developer on the sections you want to place color.
Once you have bleached the extensions and blow-dried the hair, dampen those sections and roll sidewalk chalk in the desired hue up and down the hair. The color will transfer easily and won’t stain the hair. This is a great weekend look for clients that they can wash out for the work week.
2. Vibrant Reds
To obtain bright reds a la Rihanna, put a semi-permanent hair color such as Clairol Professional Jazzing in Red Hot into a bowl, cover it with a hair cap and heat it up in the microwave for about thirty seconds. The heat will help to create a super vibrant color.
Red in extension hair fades quickly, so advise your clients to return for weekly touch-ups, or if they are up to it, to try doing them in the shower. Mix Jazzing in Red Hot shampoo (a 1:1 ratio) to use when they come in for their weekly touchups.
The lightener stops working after approximately 30 to 40 minutes, so if you rinse it out after 40 minutes and see an ashy hue, repeat the process.
Using extensions not only functions as a great way for clients to experiment with color, but it also preserves their health of their hair in the process. Let your clients know that this is a great way to enhance or change up their look with color and protect their tresses so they can opt for extensions and go for that vivacious red color they’ve been dying to try.

Using Farouk Royal Treatment, prep hair by cleansing with Pure Hydration Shampoo and Farouk Royal Treatment Aqua Charge Conditioner. Add Pearl Complex to wet hair, then blow dry using CHI Ceramic dryer.
Once hair is prepped, take small sections at the nape, horizontally. Spray the hair with Ultimate Control prior to curling for maximum hold. Using the ¾-inch CHI Digital Orbit Iron, curl the hair section by section, working your way to the top of the head. Once curled, pin sections up at the crown to give height and form. To ensure lasting hold, nish with Ultimate Control spray and Rapid Shine for silky, shiny, healthy results.

The key to this wash-and-go style is to amplify the natural curl pattern by making sure hair has enough moisture. Don’t completely rinse out conditioner after washing, then trickle some water on to re-wet hair. Before air drying, shake curls loosely. All the conditioner will give a soft, light hold and hair will also be frizz free. For extra pizzazz, scrunch in light-hold styling products on slightly wet hair. For extra volume when hair is dry, put client’s head upside down and rub ngers on the scalp to backcomb the curls with ngers, rather than a comb. This will provide volume without the frizz.

For this easy-to-achieve, elegant updo, apply a light hold styling product after washing and conditioning hair. Let air dry or gently use a diffuser. Once dry, pull back hair into a loose bun. For the piece-y, slick look, gently glide pomade through hair using ngertips. To create the sexy pompadour on top, use the back of a rat tail comb to tease and lift hair from the roots. Finish with a little shine spray for bling and nishing spray for hold.

Wash and condition the hair, then apply a leave-in conditioner and seal with a serum before blowing out the hair. Section hair with a dramatic angle from front to back, going in an “S” pattern.
Isolate one whole side of hair from the side where the braid pattern will be. Use a small amount of synthetic hair to support the cornrows, so the natural hair is protected. After completing one side of the head with the desired cornrow design, join all of the braids into one continuous braid that follows the S parting down the middle of the head from front to back.
Sew Bohyme human hair on the side of the head with the one continuous braid. Follow the pattern of the braid until the one side is complete, leaving the cornrow designs exposed. Once human-hair sewing has been completed on the one side, cut and shape the Bohyme hair, giving it volume. Finish the style with a luster and shine serum.
Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii has created many celebrity updos including Scarlett Johansson’s look for the 5th Annual Spike TV Guys Choice Awards. To create her beautiful auburn shade for your clients, David recommends using Couture Colour Luxeblend Creme Hair Colour with Pequi Oil.
• Hair is 200% stronger after one color application
• Deep, penetrating color without ammonia
• No-drip, multi-dimensional glossy color
To achieve the look, David started with a small amount of Pequi Oil massaged through the hair after shampooing. Next, he dried her tresses using his hands throughout to build volume and texture. When dry, he added additional Pequi Oil to his hands using his fingers to comb the hair back, allowing sections to fall into place naturally. To finish, David twisted and bobby pinned strands to create a “piecey” updo.
Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii created Nicole Kidman’s ponytail for the CMT Music Awards. Here he tells us how to give that look to your clients.
First, I cut a bang using a “lacing technique” at the ends to create a soft wispy fringe. Prior to blow drying, I applied a small amount of Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment through the hair. It is ideal for sealing the cuticle, while repairing and strengthening each strand. Not to mention the shine!
Next, I dried her hair with a large round brush to smooth hair straight while bumping the ends under for a slight curl. To begin, I started by drying the nape area first and then proceeded until her entire head was dry. The bang area was smoothed with a medium size round brush, loosely cupping the ends under.
Finally, to achieve her high sleek ponytail, I went through her hair with additional Pequi Oil for added shine and control plus it enhances her stunning red hair. With a wide tooth comb, I gathered the sides top and nape area into a high ponytail and secured with a band allowing shorter strands around the face to fall naturally to blend in with the newly cut bang.

For Nicole Kidman:
Starting with clean hair, David Babaii applied his new favorite must have product called Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment to her entire head. It is rich in moisture-restoring antioxidants, Vitamin A, E, proteins and lipids. The Pequi Oil Treatment instantly absorbs and won’t weigh hair down.
Next, he blow dried Nicole’s hair with the IT&Y HAIRFASHION Ionic Dryer that supplies super-fast drying power along with a large round brush to achieve a sleek straight finish. After the hair was dried, he gently back combed the top and sides for volume and then smoothed the surface.
To begin the up-do, he swept the hair gently over creating a faux side-part and brining the rest of the hair to the center back and securing with a band just at the top of the nape. David wrapped the hair into an un-structured Chignon and securing with bobby pins. The secret was not to over comb or smooth the hair but to allow the hair to create a soft natural look. To finish, he used additional Pequi Oil to her bang area to define strands. For added glamour, David added a subtle decorative clip to the side.
Danilo working with a NaturallyCurly community member
Pantene celebrity stylist Danilo has a passion for curls. He loves them in all their forms—from loose waves to tight kinks.
Danilo is very excited about the options provided by Pantene’s new Curly Hair Series, designed especially for waves, curls and kinks. From cleansing to styling to deep conditioning, the products in this line work together to give you repaired, moisturized, frizz-free curls every time. The collection provides a wide range of products to keep curls looking their best.
During a recent video shoot in New York, Danilo provided some tips to keep ringlets looking their best. The ideal style to achieve is the wash-and-wear look that works with your natural texture.
Diffuse your curls
A diffuser is a curly girl’s best friend because it doesn’t have the rapid air movement of a blow dryer that could disrupt the curl pattern. For more volume, flip your hair upside down and diffuse.
Moisture, moisture, moisture
Curly hair has an inherent need for moisture—moisture excites the curl! The Deep Moisturizing Treatment has been a huge hit with curly girls. For maximum results, Danilo suggests working the conditioner into the hair, and then combing it through after it sets for five minutes.
Protect your hair from heat damage
Any type of iron works for curly hair, but be sure to protect hair from the heat by using a heat protection spray such as Heat Protection & Shine Spray.
Enhance your curls
If you have some curls that aren’t as tight as others, try finger-curling them. You can also enhance them by using a curling iron.
NaturallyCurly was on site to help with the filming of 4 Pantene videos at the Mark Garrison Salon in New York City. While attending the IT&LY Loves Hollywood event in Las Vegas this weekend, I was in awe over a few of the Brand’s performing stylists. If you knew and had seen Pasquale Caselle on stage Monday and Tuesday, you would understand why I call it performing. What a great group of educators and wow, are they full of information!
Pasquale Caselle prepping a model for the runway show.
The IT&LY Hairfashion team put on quite the performance over three days in Las Vegas. The 3 days of classes started with an amazing fashion show and awards ceremony where the top celebrity stylists were awarded for their outstanding work in the industry. CurlStylist was buzzing around meeting and greeting, and here is a run-down of what we saw!
Alison Shipley and I
Started out Sunday with Alison Shipley, of Modern Salon. This girl is amazing! Not only does she travel as editor for “Modern Salon,” but is currently enrolled to become a stylist. She understands the need for the education in this industry. How she finds time to do all of this is beyond us!
Busy behind-the-scenes action!
We then went over to the Body English Nightclub where they were setting up and getting ready for the night. Janice McCafferty (PR guru for all things beauty) introduced us to all of the stylists who were running around, preparing models for the runway show portion of the evening.
Gorgeous Curly Model!
We saw so many curls! These IT&LY educators really love their volume, and we couldn’t agree more! Our personal favorite was a natural red-head with voluptuous curls that were accompanied by branches and flowers.
We had the pleasure of meeting several stylists who have been in the industry throughout the decades and have worked with some of the most amazing people! Barbara Lorenz and Bonnie Clevering shared stories of how tricky working with curly hair can be on the set of a movie. Apparently, Jennifer Lopez’s hair needs constant attention in humid climates! We also learned that Bonnie was the stylist for Elvis, saying that the hardest part of working with him was keeping his pompadour up!
Kenneth Walker has worked with naturally curly hair his entire life. Some of his clientele consists of Tyler Perry, Janet Jackson, and Denzel Washington, just to name a very few. Kenneth was one of the most inspirational people to speak with, to hear his passion for hair and beauty was refreshing to say the least.
Next came the awards ceremony, where we celebrated these 14 amazing stylists and their work throughout the years. CEO Richard Zucckero showed his gratitude and appreciation to have these stylists as part of the IT&LY family. Overall, the celebration was a success and a good time was had by all!
